    Description

ANTIQUE ENAMEL DECORATED CRANBERRY RIB OPTIC
PICKLE CASTOR IN WOODMAN COOK FRAME
Available for purchase is an antique pickle castor made during the late 1800s.  During Victorian days, pickle castors were a common table accessory used to display and serve small pickles and relishes.  This particular pickle castor has a cranberry glass insert in the "Rib Optic" (also called "Panel Optic") pattern.  The glass is beautifully decorated with an enamel floral pattern on the front and back sides.  The maker of the glass insert is unknown.  The jar has a tapered form and is wider near the base.  It stands about 5" tall (not including lid) and the widest portion of the body (near the base) measures approximately 3 1/2".
The silverplate frame was made by the Woodman-Cook Company in Portland, Maine during the last quarter of the 19th century.  The frame is numbered "900" and has a scroll and flower design.  The frame stands about 11 1/2" tall and measures approximately 4 1/4" wide.  It comes with a nice set of pickle tongs that have a claw foot design.  I purchased this pickle castor at a recent estate sale.  It's guaranteed to be an antique Victorian-era set and NOT a modern reproduction.
Please check my positive feedback and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.
Condition of this antique pickle castor is EXCELLENT.  The glass insert has some minor rim roughness along the top edge, as well as some wear to the gold trim on top.  The enamel portion of the flower decoration is nearly intact but there is wear to the gold leaf portion of the design.  There is also a place in the glass near the top where the cranberry color didn't come through properly (the glass is clear there).  I also see a small white inclusion on the side towards the base.
The metal frame has some discoloration and wear to the silverplate.  I did not try to clean it.  Overall, this pickle castor looks fantastic and displays beautifully.  It would make a fine addition to any collection.  Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.  I'm confident you'll be very pleased with this purchase!
