    Description

DUGAN GLASS BLUE BEADED SHELL NEW YORK PATTERN OIL CRUET WITH ORIG. STOPPER EAPG
This little beauty is an antique Victorian era glass oil cruet.
This pattern is commonly known as “Beaded Shell” or “Shell” but the original pattern name appears to be “New York”.
It was made by Dugan Glass in the former Northwood factory that was located in Indiana, Pennsylvania.
It is made in a lovely sapphire blue color and has a stopper of the same color.
The color of the glass is a bit deeper and darker blue in reality than is shown in my photos.
This one is decorated with hand painted gold trim and is not an easy piece to find in this color with the gold decoration.
The stopper in this cruet is an original pattern stopper as evidenced in the photo shown on page 88 of the below mentioned book.
The piece in my photos is the actual piece you will receive.
Please be sure to read the “Age and Condition” paragraphs below.
Pieces from this pattern are pictured in the book
Dugan/Diamond: The Story of Indiana, Pennsylvania, Glass
, by William Heacock, James Measell and Berry Wiggans.
This same item, in this same color, is pictured as photo # 180 on Page 88 of this book.
    A beautiful and desirable piece!
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.

    Age and Condition
    Circa 1905.
A few words about hand-made glass:
Since each piece is individually hand-made there may be slight imperfections such as whether the piece sits perfectly level or is perfectly symmetrical.
There may also be some minor variations in color between pieces and factory blemishes created in the process of making the glass such as tool marks, straw marks, acid runs as well as bubbles, tiny stones and tiny black ash specs internal to the glass.
I will not mention these unless I notice them during checking or photographing the glass.
None of what I have mentioned in this paragraph is in any way considered damage.
The cruet is in very good to excellent original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
I do see a couple of straw marks to the underside of the handle (this is not an applied handle) and one area where that glass has separated just a bit; this is not damage, just manufacturing flaws common to glass of this era – see the last photo.
There is a rough pontil park to the underside (a byproduct of the manufacturing process).
There is wear to the gold trim.
Inside the neck of the cruet there is roughness, which I believe is most likely from the factory “grinding in” process to seat the stopper and is fairly typical of oil cruets from this era.
There is some slight wear to the underside of the foot where the piece sits that is consistent with the age of the piece and exactly what I would expect to see on a piece of glass of this age.
Otherwise, I see no other condition issues except for some minor cloudiness in the very bottom of the cruet (I didn’t try to clean it).
The cruet rocks slightly on a flat surface as most of these old pieces do.
On the stopper there is also wear to the gold trim.
There is a small chip to the bottom of the stopper (this may have been from breaking off the sprue during the process of making the stopper) and the sprue is sharp and has not been factory ground.
I see a couple of bubbles in the glass on the upper part of the stopper and there is also some minor roughness (tiny flea bites) around the upper part of the tapered portion as well as the finial portion.
This is all very minor to me and exactly what I would expect to see on a piece of glass of this age – see my photos.
The stopper seems to fit the cruet well but was not tightly ground in, if at all, so it moves around slightly but I still believe it is original to the cruet.
The cruet is really in exceptional condition for a piece of glass over 100 years old.
Please keep in mind these photos can be blown up at least 8X-10X times normal, so anything you see will look 8X-10X times larger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
About 3” (7.6 cm) in diameter and sits about 7.75” (19.7 cm) off the table at the top of the stopper.
    Approximate Weight
    About 12.5 ounces (354 grams).
