OWNA PIECE OF SNOW BOARDING HISTORYSherm Poppen of Muskegon, Michigan fabricated two modified skies for his daughters for Christmas in 1965, his wife named them Snurfers -- they were fun, they were exciting and Sherm patented a Version 1 Snurfer design in 1966 (see patent application drawing).
The next year he contracted with Brunswick to begin manufacturing.
The Snurfer was judged to be the most significant lifestyle invention of the 60’s.
Another patent for a revised design, Version 2, was submitted later in the 60’s.
The patent drawing for Version 2 is included, as well has a photo of Sherm Poppen himself holding a Version 2 Snurfer, identical to the one currently for sale.
Muskegon Community College held the Snurfing World Championships in Muskegon beginning in 1968.
In 1980 Jake Burton came to the championships as a spectator.
The next year he showed up again, only with a “snurfer” of his design with crude bindings.
After discussions, MCC allowed Burton to compete.
While Burton’s board
apparently could not compete with traditional snurfers for speed, he went on to dominate the slalom competition for the next several years ---- and the explosion in snowboarding began.
This one owner Version 2 Snurfer was purchased in Muskegon in about 1970.
It is an early Version 2, since the patent was still pending.
It is in great shape with the original rope intact, decals barely damaged and shows very little wear.
The only damage are several broken ribs on the foot plates.
